Day 1

  1. For your first assignment this week, you will be completing a KWL chart. This is a chart that shows you what you KNOW, what you WANT to know, and what you have LEARNED. You are going to fill out the chart with any and all knowledge you have about the regions of the United States and/or the continents and oceans and where they are all located in the world. Follow this link to see an example of a KWL chart.

DIRECTIONS:
  • On your computer, open up Microsoft Word.
  • Create a chart by going to "Insert", "Table", then "Insert Table"
  • Set the number of columns as 3 and rows as 10
  • In the first row, write "know", "want to know" and "learned" in each cell
  • For each column, write something that you know or want to know about the geography of the US and world- don't write anything for the learned column, you can't fill that part out because we haven't gone over the topic yet
  • List at least 5 things that you KNOW and WANT to know about the topic
  • Save the file as your name

2. After you have completed the KWL chart, you will start on this next assignment. For this assignment, you will be examining a globe or map and coming up with your own idea about the geography of the world.

DIRECTIONS:
  • Get into groups of 2
  • Take turns with other groups looking at the and maps in the classroom
  • Examine the geography and the location of the continents and oceans
  • With your partner, write down 10 things on a sheet of paper that you notice about the geography of the continents and oceans. For example, you may notice that Australia is south of Asia, North America is above South America, or Europe is attached to Asia.
  • When you are finished, write both your names on the top right corner of the paper and hand it in.

Day 2smile.jpg

Today, you will be completing 2 assignments.
  1. First, you are going to complete a crossword puzzle using your knowledge of the world and a world map. Click on the file below to download the puzzle. HINT: Use this mapto help you fill out the crossword puzzle. Write the answers beside the questions. When you are finished, type your name in the upper right hand corner and print it. Here is the file of the puzzle you need to download:

2. Next, you are going to create a concept map. For this assignment:
  • Open the Inspiration program on your computer
  • Using the map of the United States, choose a region in the United States
  • Make your chosen region the main idea of your concept map (we have gone over the functions of the Inspiration program so you should know how to do this)
  • Link all the states in the region you chose to the region on the concept map (use the map I gave you above to help you)
  • When you are finished, save the file as your name. You are done!

Remember, these assignments should be done individually and in a timely manner. This means you need to concentrate on your work and do not goof off or else you will not finish.

Day 3

  1. Yesterday, you chose 1 region in the United States and formed a concept web using the states in your chosen region. Today, you are going to create a spreadsheet to list ALL of the regions and the states that belong to each region. You are going to use Microsoft Excel for this assignment.

DIRECTIONS
  • Open Microsoft Excel on your computer
  • Organize the spreadsheet by listing the regions into columns. For example, put the Southeast region into the "A 1" column, the Southwest region into the "B 1" column, and so on for all of the regions
  • Next, list all of the states under the region they belong to for each column. For example, for the Southeast region, list the states (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, etc) in the "A" column below the Southeast region.
  • Use this map that you used yesterday to help you
  • When you are finished, save the file as your name.

2. After you have created your spreadsheet, on a sheet of paper, write down 5 states in the United States (choose any 5 states you want). Beside each state, name the region that each state belongs to. Write your name in the top right corner and hand it in.

Day 4

For this assignment, you are going to make a map of the 7 continents. Then, using Microsoft Word, you are going to create a chart to name the continents and recognize what each continent looks like.

DIRECTIONS
  • Check to make sure that you have all of your materials. You should have blue construction paper, the 7 paper continents already cut out, glue, and a pencil
  • Glue the continents to the place where they belong onto the construction paper. You may use the globe in front of the class to help you see where the continents are located and at what angle they should be placed
  • Label the name of each continent
  • When you think you have placed the continents in the right location, go to a computer with your map.
  • Open up Microsoft Word
  • Create a chart by going to "Insert", go to the drop down arrow under "Table" and click "Insert Table". Set the number of columns as 3 and the number of rows as 8
  • In the top row, label each column, "Name of Continent", "Appearance", and "Way to Remember".
  • List the continents in the first column
  • In the second column, identify what each continent looks like. For example, you can say that Australia is small, or Antarctica is very long.
  • In the third column, think of a way to remember where the continents are located. For example, you might say that Africa is below Europe and east of South America, or that North America is north of South America and west of Europe.
  • Save the file as your name when you are finished.

Note: Try to complete the chart as best you can.You may need to use it to study for a test in the near future!

  • Blow up your balloon
  • Using a world globe or map, draw the continents in their proper location as best you can
  • Write in the name of each continent in its correct shape
  • Get with a partner and compare your balloons
  • Go to a computer with your partner and open Microsoft Word
  • Together, choose a continent and write 5 facts about it. The facts can be about where the continent is located, what it looks like, how big it is, etc.
  • Write both of your names in the top right corner of the document and save the file as both of your initials.

2. After you and your partner have completed the first assignment, you will each go to your own computer and finish your KWL chart. To see the example of a KWL chart again, click here. HINT: You may want to describe some of the continents, write where some of them are located, or list some of the states that are in one of the regions in the United States.

DIRECTIONS
  • At your own computer, open Microsoft Word
  • Click file, open to open your KWL document
  • You should have filled in the first 2 columns. Now you are going to fill in the third column
  • Complete the "learned" portion of the chart. Remember, this should be what you have LEARNED this week in class. List at least 5 things that you have learned throughout the week.
  • When you are finished, save the file.
